Embassy of Japan

The Government of Japan donated RM118,381.10, to Education and Research Association for Consumers, Malaysia (ERA Consumer Malaysia) for the purchase of a van and equipment for developing a mobile community unit.  The mobile community unit will be used to provide capacity development programs to the urban poor, suburban and rural communities.

The Embassy of Japan and ERA Consumer Malaysia signed and exchanged the grant contract on 10th December 2008, and the above mentioned vehicle and equipment have been purchased under the grant.

The vehicle and equipment were handed over to ERA Consumer Malaysia on 27th April 2009.  H.E. Mr. Masahiko Horie, Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia, YB Datuk Dr. S. Subramaniam, Minister of Human Resources and Datuk Marimuthu Nadason, President of ERA Consumer Malaysia, were present at the handing-over ceremony.

With this mobile community unit, ERA Consumer Malaysia will be able to carry out its programs at the more rural areas where they could not reach previously.

Since 1989, the Government of Japan has extended about RM10 million to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and local governments in Malaysia under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects scheme as a way to contribute to many small but socially important projects at the grassroots level.

 * ERA Consumer Malaysia is a NGO, established in 1985, involved in community based social work. It conducts capacity development programs, such as self-empowerment, income generating, human right education, etc. to the urban poor, suburban and rural communities.
