Due to the vast damages caused by the Great East Japan
Earthquake, Japan now faces the most critical situation in history.
However, Malaysian people and groups have been showing tremendous
support for Japan. The Prime Minister, Hon. Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib and
government leaders, parliament, economic and local leaders, as well as
retirees, primary and secondary school students, have taken part
actively in various events and activities to assist Japan in this hard
time. I am deeply touched and encouraged, and hence, I would like to
express my sincere thanks to our Malaysian friends.
Japan-Malaysia exchange can be traced back to the Malacca Sultanate in
the 15th century. Bilateral relations, however, dramatically deepened
and widened in 1981, thanks to the Look East Policy introduced by then
Prime Minister, Hon. Tun Dr. Mahathir. Since 1982, more than 14,000
Malaysians have visited Japan and many Japanese have also visited
Malaysia. The Look East Policy will celebrate its 30th anniversary next
year. One of the highlights and culmination of various projects under
the Look East Policy, namely the Malaysia-Japan International Institute
of Technology (MJIIT), will be opening in Kuala Lumpur soon. I think
that cooperation between Malaysia and Japan will lead to deeper and
stronger bilateral ties as we venture beyond 30 years towards the 40th
anniversary of the Look East Policy.

Furthermore, the Japan and Malaysia economic relation was built upon a
strong bilateral relationship. As Malaysia aims to become a developed
nation by year 2020, Japan will further develop economic relations with
Malaysia in various fields by providing indirect support for enhancing
social capital and brisk economic activities.
Malaysia, as one of the leading members of ASEAN, is strengthening
bilateral ties via mutual visits of national leaders. I hope that
Malaysia will continue promoting cooperation in global issues such as
peacekeeping operations and maritime security.
When the Prime Minister, Hon. Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib visited Japan last
year in April, the Japan-Malaysia Joint Leaders' Statement "Enhanced
Partnership for a New Frontier" was announced. With His Excellency’s
second visit to Japan recently (25~26 May 2011), Japan-Malaysia mutual
bond is further strengthened. Malaysia is indeed one of Japan’s closest
friends. I look forward to working together with all of you for further
development in Japan-Malaysia friendship. |
