Japanese traditional culture introduced at Japan Morning, KL Ikebana International

Embassy of Japan in Kuala Lumpur
13 February 2014

KL Chapter of Ikebana International hosted an event to introduce Japanese culture at the Japanese Ambassador’s Residence on 6 February. At this event called “Japan Morning”, Ikebana and Shigin were demonstrated, and traditional Japanese New Year’s games were introduced to the participants.

Ikebana was demonstrated by Grand Master Tokiwa Sasaki of the Yamato Ikenobo, who was invited from Japan just for this occasion. By using pine, bamboo and plum, all of which are said to be auspicious plants and appropriate during the New Year, she arranged three kinds of Ikebana.

Shigin, recitation of a Chinese or Japanese poem in a Japanese traditional way, was demonstrated by Master Ryofu Makino and his apprentice Shuju Sube. After the demonstration, under the instructions by Makino sensei, the participants together practiced Shigin.

The third part of the event was to enjoy Japanese traditional games, which are played during the New Year. Hanetsuki, Koma and paper balloons were introduced and the participants actually had a chance to play with them. The occasion turned out to be both impressive and enjoyable.
