A “Japan Cultural Envoy” is an artist or person within the academic or artistic career who is appointed to act to deepen the understanding of Japanese Culture in foreign countries and also to form or strengthen the network of people in the career of artists between Japan and overseas. Since this system took off I 2003, this is only the second time a cartoonist has been appointed as the “Japan Cultural Envoy”. With Malaysia as the starting point, Mr. Iwami would have brought his creative talent to Singapore, South Korea and United Kingdom by next July.

On 6th August, under the tutelage of Mr. Iwami, students of Sekolah Menengah Sains Kuala Selangor drew each other’s portrait in pairs or groups. Subsequently , on 10th August 2010 students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tinggi Perempuan Melaka learned the basic skills of drawing Manga. After each enriching session in both schools, Mr. Iwami concluded with a mini “grand finale” where he surprised participants with their own portrait skillfully drawn using alphabets from their own name using a writing brush on canvas.
