We had the
pleasure to organize a Japanese Cultural Event at Sekolah Tun Fatimah
in Johor Bahru on 11 March. This secondary school is where one of the
four young Japanese language teachers was dispatched to in 2009 as the
1st batch of Japanese language teachers under the Japan-East Asia
Network of Exchange for Student and Youths (JENESYS) programme.
The
programme for the Japanese Cultural Event was specially tailored for
the all girls’ residential school. Some highlights include the
presentation of Japanese traditional dances such as Chakkiri-Bushi,
Tawara-Tsumi-Uta, Soran-Bushi, thanks to the participation of the
Japanese Traditional Dance & Music Club of Japan Club, Kuala
Lumpur. We also held workshops on “How to wear Yukata (summer type
kimono)” and “Bon-Odori Dancing”, a dance widely held throughout Japan
during the summer festival celebrations. Around 180 students and
teachers had great fun participating in the activities, which greatly
enriched their cross-cultural experience. The school principal took the
lead by bravely taking on the challenge to don on the yukata!
After
the event, some students gave an impressive singing performance of
songs by Kiroro, a famous Japanese musical group. Their pronunciation
was surprisingly natural! Big thumbs up for these students!
