The Malaysian Association of Japanese Studies (MAJAS) held an
international academic conference on 30 and 31 October. Under the title
"Rethinking Japan’s Engagement with Asia", the conference was held in
commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the foundation of University
of Malaya’s Japan Studies Program, and the 40th Year of ASEAN-Japan
Friendship and Cooperation. Symposiums and session meetings were held
among the participating Japanologists from the ASEAN countries, Europe
and the US, and Japanese academics specializing in ASEAN countries. The
Embassy of Japan was among the co-sponsors of the conference. Reflecting the recent development in the interdisciplinary research in Japanese studies, many active discussions were held, under such sub-themes as "Japan Studies: The Current State and Future Prospects”, "Japan at Crossroads”. At the conference dinner, Ambassador Nakamura delivered a speech and congratulated UM’s Japan Studies Program for its 20th anniversary, and at the same time, thanking MAJAS for their endeavors and wishing them best in their undertakings. |
