Symposiums and session meetings were held among the participating Japanologists from the ASEAN countries, Europe and the US, and Japanese academics specializing in ASEAN countries. The Embassy of Japan was among the co-sponsors of the conference.

Reflecting the recent development in the interdisciplinary research in Japanese studies, many active discussions were held, under such sub-themes as "Japan Studies: The Current State and Future Prospects”, "Japan at Crossroads”.

At the conference dinner, Ambassador Nakamura delivered a speech and congratulated UM’s Japan Studies Program for its 20th anniversary, and at the same time, thanking MAJAS for their endeavors and wishing them best in their undertakings.
