Launching Ceremony of Scholarships for ASEAN Students to Study at MJIIT |

On May 27, a scholarship programme for ASEAN students to study at the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT) was introduced to diplomatic missions in Malaysia during the launching ceremony which was held at MJIIT. The scholarship programme (approximately 1 million US Dollars) is funded by the Japanese government via the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF), as stated by Prime Minister Abe to Prime Minister Najib during the Japan-Malaysia Summit Meeting held in December last year. Prof. Dr. Hamdani Saidi, Director of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia International Campus, Prof. Datin Dr. Rubiyah bt. Yusof, Dean of MJIIT, heads of diplomatic missions including the Japanese Ambassador, Singaporean High Commissioner, Myanmar Ambassador and Laotian Ambassador as well as representatives from ASEAN nations attended the launching ceremony. The event began with a welcome speech by Prof. Dr. Hamdani. This was followed by a speech by Datin Paduka Ir. Dr. Siti Hamisah bt Tapsir, Deputy Director General of the Higher Education Department, Ministry of Education, who highlighted that the Malaysian government planned to make MJIIT the hub for Japanese style engineering education in the ASEAN region. She added that the scholarships provided by JAIF for developing ASEAN human resource matched the current trend of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), which will be established in 2015. In his speech, Japanese Ambassador Dr. Miyagawa mentioned that in addition to Japanese science and technology, social values, such as work ethics, were also being adopted in Malaysia’s development through the Look East Policy. He further explained that MJIIT, being the hub of Japanese style engineering education and the culmination of the Look East Policy, has opened its doors to ASEAN nations. He also urged the ASEAN nations to utilize the JAIF scholarships to nurture the talents needed in each country. ![]() ![]() |
