Opening of Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT)

The Embassy of Japan is pleased to announce that the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT) located in Kuala Lumpur has opened and held its orientation for its first batch of undergraduate students (about 60 students) today. Lectures are scheduled to start on 12 September (Monday). The first batch of postgraduate students has about 30 students.

MJIIT is an academic institution in Malaysia which conducts Japanese style engineering education. Its establishment was affirmed by the Malaysian government in May 2010, based on the Japan-Malaysia Prime Ministers’ Statement in April 2010. The Japanese Consortium, with universities in Japan taking the lead, provides cooperation in various aspects, such as dispatching Japanese academic staffs, designing curriculum, etc.

MJIIT not only promotes human exchanges between Japan and Malaysia, it is also an institution which nurtures brilliant students in Japanese style engineering education. MJIIT strives to become the engineering education hub in ASEAN and is expected to develop into the leading higher education institution in Asia.

  1. MJIIT was conceptualized as one of the compilation projects of Look East Policy, which was introduced by then Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir in 1982. The initial idea was to establish a university which provides Japanese style engineering education in Malaysia. In 2001, the Malaysian government proposed to establish an international institute of technology and the proposal was promoted in the Japan-Malaysia Leaders’ Summit. The MJIIT school building located within the UTM International Campus is currently under construction and lectures will be conducted temporarily in school building nearby UTM until the completion of MJIIT school building.
  2. Japan has formed a consortium constituted by participating universities, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The Japanese Consortium provides cooperation to MJIIT in designing curriculum, dispatching Japanese academic staffs, etc. Currently, the 23 Japanese universities listed in no particular order below are participating in the consortium:
Kyushu University, Keio University, Saitama University, Shibaura Institute of Technology, Takushoku University, Tokai University, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Nagaoka University of Technology, Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Meiji University, Ritsumeikan University, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, Osaka University, Yamaguchi University, Kinki University, Tokyo University of Technology, Tokyo Denki University, Tokyo University of Science, Okayama University of Science, Kyushu Institute of Technology, Kanazawa University, Toyohashi University of Technology.
