The Opening Ceremony of Utokushima-UTeM Academic Centre
24 September 2014

On 23rd of September, the Opening Ceremony of Utokushima-UTeM Academic Centre was held at the main campus of Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka(UTeM). Yang Berusaha Dr. Ibrahim bin Abu Ahmad, Senior Deputy Under-Secretary of Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Makio Miyagawa, Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia, Professor Dr. Susumu Kagawa, president of the University of Tokushima(UTokushima) as well as the staff and students of UTeM attended the event.

Since the establishment of UTeM in 2000, the Malaysian Graduates of UTokushima have devoted themselves to advancing the collaboration between the two universities in the form of interaction and exchange of students and researchers. The new centre, TMAC, in a more advanced method of collaboration, will provide lectures via teleconferencing in Japanese linguistic education for UTeM students, and also provide a platform for internship placements of UTokushima students in various industries in Melaka.

Ambassador Miyagawa mentioned in his speech that sustained support for Malaysian students studying in Japan and in Japanese linguistic education laid a solid foundation for future collaboration in the innovation and development of new educational areas for both Malaysia and Japan. Ambassador Miyagawa also added that academic co-operation in the field of science and engineering education will help Malaysia to accomplish its aspiration to become a high income and developed nation by 2020, as well as help both Malaysia and Japan to grow into hubs for international centres of excellence in higher education.

Japan is now pushing forward reforms to globalize the country’s higher education system in the form of overseas expansion and enhancing the mutual exchange of students. Meanwhile, Malaysia is also pursuing a strategy to attract foreign universities to set up branches in the country. Within this context, the last several years have witnessed much progress in the creation of partnerships between academic institutions of the two countries, namely (i)The Malaysia-Japan international institute of Technology (MJIIT) in UTM, (ii)Kyushu Institute of Technology Malaysia Super Satellite Campus (Kyutech MSSC) in UPM and (iii)Toyohashi University of Technology (TUT)-USM in Penang. We hope that the timely opening of TMAC will further accelerate this trend and will help to strengthen the tie between Japan and Malaysia in academic areas.
