Handover of Equipment for Preventing Sea Smuggling Activities |
The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (RMCD) held the
handover ceremony of the recently completed “Project for Strengthening
the Capabilities for Preventing Sea Smuggling and Other Illegal
Activities in Malaysia” on 14th February 2011 at the Royal Selangor
Yacht Club, Port Klang. These equipment are donated under the Japanese
Grant Aid. In this project, ten (10) units of speed boat (Guaranteed
Speed: 55 kt) and fourteen units of hand held thermal imager were
procured and introduced, which will cater for increasing the capability
of sea-control of the whole peninsular Malaysian and major east
Malaysian waters as well as strengthening night-time control
capabilities. The Straits of Malacca is one of the most important shipping lanes, which 200 vessels pass through per day, carrying about one-third of the world’s sea traded goods. The number of maritime crimes such as smuggling, illegal entrance, etc., at the Straits of Malacca has been increasing. As such, the safety and security in the Straits is a high concern not only for Malaysia but also for international users like Japan. In this circumstance, the Government of Malaysia forwarded the request for the Project in March 2007. The Exchange of Notes of the Project, which clarified the grant of up to 714 million yen (equivalent to RM 27 million) was signed by both Governments. In this project, 6 speed boats were distributed to bases in Peninsula Malaysia such as Port Klang, Malacca, Johor Bahru, Langkawi, Lumut and Penang, and the other 4 boats were delivered to bases in Sandakan, Tawau, Miri and Bintulu. The equipment enables the respective bases to control the sea area with 24-hour patrols and to monitor the area during the night time. This will contribute to the maritime security of Malaysia, in particular, the Malacca Straits area and the East Malaysia sea area, and the prevention of terror activities and piracy/armed robbery activities in South-East Asia. ![]() ![]() *For more information, please contact Embassy of Japan, Mr. Yoshihiro Matsumoto, yoshihiro.matsumoto@mofa.go.jp, or Ms. Rose 03-2177-2600, ext: 121 |
