Handover Ceremony to the Alumni Look East Policy Society (ALEPS)
under Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects

The Government of Japan has donated RM22,380 to the Alumni Look East Policy Society (referred to as ALEPS) for the “Project for Purchasing Used Wheelchairs for Children”.

The Handover Ceremony for the refinished wheelchairs was held on 5 November 2012 at Sekolah Kebangsaan Teluk Pulai, Sungai Bertek 41200 Klang, Selangor together with a Mini Japan Festival in Klang 2012 co-organised by ALEPS and Sekolah Kebangsaan Teluk Pulai. Mr Hiroshi Matsuura, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan, Mr Syed Putera, President of ALEPS, Puan Hajjah Rozita bt Haji Sulaiman, Headmistress of Sekolah Kebangsaan Teluk Pulai, Mr Kensuke Oda, Director of the Japanese NGO called “The Group to Send Wheelchairs to Overseas Children”, which collects used children’s wheelchairs in Japan to send them overseas, delivered a speech.


Grassroots


ALEPS, with the membership of about 4,000, is an alumni association of students of Japanese universities under the Look East Policy and it supports Malaysia-Japan exchange programs. In its activities, ALEPS also runs a project of lending used-wheelchairs from Japan to children in need, as part of Malaysia-Japan exchange programs.

Donated items: Transportation cost of about 100 second-hand wheelchairs for children from Japan
Recipient: ALEPS
 
Since 1989, the Government of Japan has extended about RM14.25 million to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and local governments in Malaysia under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects Scheme as a way to contribute to many small but socially important projects at the grassroots level.
