On 18th December, the 4th International Symposium on Asian
Vertebrate Species Diversity was held at the Botanic Garden, University
of Malaya. Ambassador Miyagawa attended the opening ceremony of the
symposium, and mentioned in his speech, with extending his gratitude to
the University of Malaya for hosting the conference, that human history
have owed immensely to biodiversity, particularly to diverse animals
and plants. Ambassador Miyagawa also added that remarkable economic
growth in Asia brings threats to its ecosystems and biodiversities, on
the other hand, it may also offer conservation opportunities.
This
conference is based on the joint research among Kyoto University
Museum, University of Malaya and other universities from 5 countries
(China, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia), and supported by
the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Core-to-Core
Program. In this way, the Government of Japan supports the development
of human resources and the solution of prevailing problems in the
Asia-African regions.
