9th December, Ambassador Miyagawa made opening remarks at the 5th
BIMP-EAGA and Japan Senior Officials’ Consultation in Kota Kinabalu.In his speech, the Ambassador introduced the assistance policy of Japan and various cooperation projects carried out by Japan in the BIMP-EAGA, and also referred to the significance of further enhancing the cooperation between Japan and the BIMP-EAGA that has the high potential. BIMP-EAGA member countries, in return, expressed their appreciation for the cooperation by Japan, and expectation to further deepen collaboration between Japan and BIMP-EAGA in such fields as eco-tourism as well as trade and investment. (*) BIMP is an acronym of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, and EAGA is that of the East ASEAN Growth Area. It was started in 1994 to jointly develop peripheral less-developed areas of the four countries. Together with the Mekong Region Development on the Indochina Peninsula, BIMP-EAGA constitutes a part of the effort to narrow gaps in the ASEAN region.
