Visit to the Japanese Destroyer OHNAMI by Ambassador Miyagawa
(To encourage its crew who has been dispatched to assist in the Crash of an AirAsia Plane)

1 January 2015

On December 31, Ambassador Miyagawa visited the Japanese Destroyer OHNAMI during a port call at Port Klang in Selangor State to encourage the crew of the Escort Division 6 (ED 6) of the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) which is preparing to dispatch a Japan Disaster Relief (JDR) Team in response to the crash of an Indonesian AirAsia Plane. Ambassador Miyagawa expressed his gratitude to the crew for their previous missions and encouraged the crew of ED6 to fully contribute to the Disaster Relief Operations and to provide support to the victims’ families.

ED 6 had accomplished their anti-piracy operations, off the Coast of Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden since July 2014. The Destroyer, which was anchored at Port Klang for refueling and victualing, had set sail for search and rescue duty on the 2nd of January. It headed towards the vicinity of the Karimata Strait in response to requests received from the Government of Indonesia, as well as Malaysia, where the AirAsia corporate headquarters is located.
