- It is a great pleasure to visit Malaysia in
my first tour to the Southeast Asian countries as Minister for Foreign
Affairs. I wish to take this opportunity to renew Japan’s sincere
gratitude to the support and encouragement extended by the ASEAN
members in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake.
- This meeting with Foreign Minister Dato' Sri Anifah
Hj. Aman was very fulfilling. We shared our views covering wide range
of areas from bilateral relationship, regional, to global issues.
- Japan and Malaysia has long standing friendship and a
lot of mutual interest fostered through Look East Policy, trade and
investment. Minister Anifah Aman and I have agreed that our bilateral
relationship is important not only for our both countries but also for
the stability and prosperity of the region.
- Minister Anifah Aman and I have agreed to
further strengthen our bilateral relations over the following aspects;
- On the economic front, I
expressed that the Japanese government will support the effort of
Malaysia to achieve “Vision 2020”. In this context, we agreed to
enhance our cooperation in the field of Infrastructure development and
renewable energy in relation to Smart Community, water supply, sewage
and ETC.
- We agreed to further
promote the bilateral cooperation toward next year’s 30th anniversary
of the “Look East Policy” in Malaysia. Last night I had a meeting with
representatives of the former Malaysian student in Japan under the Look
East Policy and again acknowledged that our friendship has been
sustained by these people. Minister Anifah Aman and I also congratulate
the opening of the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology
(MJIIT), which is one of the culminations of the “Look East Policy.”
- We agreed to
cooperate
in ensuring the safety of maritime navigation in the Strait of Malacca.
- As for the regional and the international issues, we
exchanged our vies over East Asia Summit (EAS), ASEAN Summit,
Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement (TTP), North
Korea, UN reform, and Climate Change. Also, we agreed to enhance our
cooperation on the support for the promotion of the Middle East peace
process.
- The key pillar of my foreign policy is to build a
prosperous and stable order in the Asia-Pacific region underpinned by
the democratic values. I am confident that my visit to Malaysia is the
first step toward the realization of the goal. Japan intends to closely
collaborate with Malaysia also under the framework of regional
cooperation to contribute together to the regional stability and
prosperity.
