MEXT Minister Hirofumi Hirano’s Visit to Malaysia |
9 July 2012 Mr. Hirofumi Hirano, Minister of Education,
Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan visited
Malaysia from 6th to 7th July 2012.Embassy of Japan in Malaysia During his visit, he had a bilateral meeting with Higher Education Minister Khaled Nordin, during which they signed the Memorandum of Understanding for Higher Education. Minister Hirano also visited the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT) and graced the Japanese Speech Contest for students of the Japanese preparatory programme. In the bilateral meeting with Minister Khaled Nordin held on 6th July, both ministers discussed on further enhance student exchange for higher education and future development of MJIIT. The Memorandum of Understanding for Higher Education signed between the two ministers aim to facilitate: • exchange of academic staff, teachers, trainees, experts and students between institutions of higher learning; • exchange of information on the system and structure of higher education, reforms and new educational technologies; • exchange of educational literature, teaching aids, information and demonstration materials; • any other areas of cooperation in the field of higher education between our two countries. On 7th July, Minister Hirano visited the MJIIT and had a fruitful discussion with Professor Dato' Ir Dr. Zaini bin Ujang, Vice Chancellor of Universiti Technologi Malaysia, on the future development of MJIIT. The establishment of the newly launched MJIIT holds promising prospects for transforming the educational landscape of Malaysia and beyond. Minister Hirano also greeted the Japanese professors who are currently lecturing in MJIIT and the students studying there. Following the visit to MJIIT, Minister Hirano proceeded to grace the Japanese Speech Contest held at University of Malaya. In addressing the students, he cheered them on in their journey of Japanese language learning under the preparatory programme, that they may press on towards their destination of studying in Japan. Minister Hirano was pleasantly surprised and truly impressed by the quality of speeches delivered by the students. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Malaysia's Look East Policy. It is expected that Japanese MEXT Minister Hirofumi Hirano’s visit to Malaysia will serve to further develop the relationship of friendly cooperation forged between Japan and Malaysia through the Look East Policy.
