On 10 December, Ambassador Shikata made a visit to Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) KL campus and toured some facilities in Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT). Ambassador Shikata interacted with MJIIT students who learn Japanese in Japanese Language and Cultural Centre and then encouraged Japanese professors in a laboratory.

MJIIT was established under the agreement between Japanese and Malaysian governments in September 2011. It is a higher education institute located in Malaysia which provides Japanese-style engineering education to young Malaysian and international students. About 1400 undergraduates and about 800 postgraduates graduated from MJIIT. Besides providing yen loan (6.7 billion yen), Japan extended cooperation through the formation of the Japanese University Consortium by dispatching Japanese academic staffs and developing its curriculum. The consortium continues to collaborate on student and faculty exchanges, joint education programs, joint research and so on.
