The OTEC Plant is supported by the Government of Japan as SATREPS (Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development) project ‘The Project for Development of Advanced Hybrid OTEC Technology for Low Carbon Society and Sustainable Energy System: First Experimental OTEC Plant of Malaysia(H-OTEC)'. During the visit, Dr. Sathia from UTM explained how OTEC works, and then the participants saw the construction status of the pilot plant and the seawater intake points. Dr. Sathia also informed the participating media that the plant, the first of its kind in South-East Asia, is an international and interdisciplinary study towards the commercialization of OTEC.
