Ambassador Oka’s Official Visit to the State of Penang

On 21st February, Ambassador Oka made an official visit to Penang Island and paid courtesy calls on YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang, YB Dato' Ar. Yew Tung Seang, Mayor of Penang Island City Council and YB Tuan Zairil Khir Johari, State Executive Councillor of Penang for Public Works, Utilities and Flood Mitigation.

At the meetings, they reconfirmed the cordial relations between Japan and Penang over the years and exchanged views for further cooperation in various fields such as city development, transportation, economy, education and culture.
In addition, Ambassador Oka visited Penang International Commercial City (PICC) and had a meeting with representatives of the Japanese community to exchange views on local business and cultural exchange activities during his visit. Furthermore, Ambassador Oka attended the reception to celebrate the Birthday of His Majesty The Emperor of Japan which was held by Consul-General Mr. Kanoya.
There are over 3,000 Japanese people residing in Penang and over 100 companies from Japan have invested in the state. Japan has strong ties with Penang as it is currently a major investor in the state and its biggest investor in 2018.
