Re-entry to Japan

If you are a foreign national who holds a long term residence status in Japan, you will need to have valid (a) residence card, (b) valid re-entry permit to re-enter Japan.
You will not be able to re-enter if your residence card has expired or your re-entry permit is invalid.
If you exited Japan with ”Minashi” re-entry permit (Special re-entry permit), you have to return within one year from your exit date/period of stay stated on your residence card (whichever comes first).
Note: The period of re-entry permit is two-years for special permanent residents (特別永住者)
Please check the back of your disembarkation card, you will have a Minashi re-entry permit stamp at the back of the card if you exited Japan with “Minashi” re-entry permit.
If you obtained the multiple re-entry permit at the Immigration Services Agency and exited Japan with multiple re-entry permit, you are eligible to exit/enter Japan multiple times within the validity of your multiple re-entry permit/period of stay stated on your residence card (whichever comes first).

Q. My residence status/ residence card is still valid but my re-entry permit has expired, can I re-enter Japan?
A. No. you cannot re-enter Japan if your re-entry permit is invalid. If you wish to re-enter Japan, your employer / university / school/ Japanese spouse will need to reapply Certificate of Eligibility (COE) for you first at the Immigration Services Agency in Japan. After you obtain the original COE, you will need to apply japan visa at respective Embassy or Consulate offices with the COE before entering Japan.
Q. My residence status/residence card is still valid but my multiple re-entry permit is expiring soon, can I extend the multiple re-entry permit at the Embassy of Japan in Malaysia?
A. Yes. Embassy/Consulate offices can extend the multiple re-entry permit for a maximum of one year for one time only. Kindly email us at visa@kl.mofa.go.jp with the information below before we advise you further.

Q. I am a Permanent Resident of Japan and exited Japan with multiple re-entry permit and I have no plans to return to Japan during the pandemic. My multiple re-entry permit is going to expire next month. Can I apply for the extension after it is expired?
A. You need to apply for the extension before it is expired. Kindly email us at visa@kl.mofa.go.jp with the below information so that we advise you further.
