On 28th and 29th March, the Embassy of Japan in Malaysia hosted talk sessions and a workshop by manga artist Sanpo Yokoi and illustrator Rokkakkei.
Sanpo Yokoi is a versatile Japanese manga artist who graduated from University of Tsukuba. After making his debut by receiving an Honorable Mention in a newcomer competition from Kodansha’s Monthly Shonen Magazine, he has built a diverse and highly successful portfolio, including his works on official manga adaptations for world-renowned Japanese video game franchises through KADOKAWA Game Linkage.
Rokkakkei is an illustrator and concept artist, and co-creator of many of Sanpo Yokoi’s projects. She served as the concept artist, character designer, monster designer, and partial CG modeler for the animation film "Who Said Death Is Beautiful?" (Dir. Ryo Nakajima), which was officially selected for the 2024 Annecy International Animation Film Festival and won Best Animation at the 2025 Philip K. Dick Science Fiction Film Festival.
On 28th March, a talk session was held, co-hosted by Nippon Designers School Malaysia College, at the college for its students as well as the general public. During the Q&A session, many questions were raised by students and other audience members, including those aspiring to become future creators.
On 29th March, a talk session and a workshop were held, co-hosted by the University of Tsukuba, Malaysia, at the campus for its students as well as the general public. During the talk session, live drawing was also conducted by Rokkakkei. Participants listened attentively to the two professionals’ insights, which covered not only manga creation techniques but also their perspectives and attitudes toward creative work.
We sincerely thank all participants for their enthusiastic engagement. It is hoped that this event will further enhance interest in Japanese pop culture in Malaysia and deepen cultural exchange between Japan and Malaysia.
