The Entrance Ceremony of the University of Tsukuba, Malaysia (UTMy) 2026

2026/9/7
On 1st September, Counsellor Mr. KITAOKA Tatsuya attended the entrance ceremony for the third cohort of the University of Tsukuba, Malaysia (UTMy), where he delivered congratulatory remarks.

Counsellor KITAOKA congratulated the new students and noted that, since its establishment in 1973, the University of Tsukuba has continuously promoted reforms in education and research that transcend traditional academic and organizational boundaries. He also introduced some of the University’s recent forward-looking initiatives, including the Academic Inquiry Tutorial, G-SIGMA, and T-REX.

He further referred to the view expressed by Prof. Dr. NAGATA Kyosuke, the President of the University of Tsukuba, that “the Malaysia Campus is, for us, one of our undergraduate schools,” and encouraged the new students to see themselves not merely as “students of UTMy,” but as “students of the University of Tsukuba.”

He also highlighted what is expected of University of Tsukuba students: to learn beyond the boundaries of academic disciplines and cultures, to formulate their own questions, and to create new knowledge and value. He expressed his hope that the students would realize these goals through their studies at the University of Tsukuba.

UTMy opened in September 2024 and welcomed its third cohort this year. At the School of Transdisciplinary Science and Design, students receive interdisciplinary education spanning the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences, with data science serving as one of the key foundations of the program.

The Embassy of Japan in Malaysia will continue to support the further development of higher education and academic exchange between Japan and Malaysia, including through UTMy.
