Provision of negative pressure ambulance and vehicles from the Government of Japan to MRCS through IFRC
2021/4/15
On 9 April, Ambassador Oka attended a handover ceremony to provide negative pressure ambulance and vehicle to the Malaysian Red Crescent Society through The International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) and Malaysia Red Crescent Societies (MRCS).
Since March 2020, Japan has contributed approximately USD24 million to 27 countries in Asia and the Middle East through the Office of the IFRC. Of the total contribution, USD970,000 was provided to MRCS for Malaysia. MRCS used part of the funds to procure a negative pressure ambulance for the first time in Malaysia. Other than the negative pressure ambulance and vehicle, the funds were also utilized for:
1) distributing food packages to 5,000 households and hygiene kits such as hand sanitizers to 3,000 households.
2) distributing PPE such as surgical masks mostly to Sabah
3) procuring trucks for transportation
4) procuring ICT equipment to hold virtual meetings
5) providing education assistance such as remote learning
During the ceremony, Ambassador Oka expressed his deep appreciation to the IFRC and MRCS for its efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic and the hope that the ambulance will enable IFRC and MRCS to further control the pandemic for the Malaysian people. Furthermore, Ambassador Oka highlighted the support from Japan through the IFRC and MRCS, as well as publicized the assistance from the Government of Japan such as the provision of humanitarian aid through the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), provision of cold-chain equipment through UNICEF as ‘Last One Mile Support’ to ensure vaccination, provision of medical equipment to the Malaysian Government, provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) through JICA, and efforts to establish the ASEAN Centre for Infectious Diseases.
