Ambassador Takahashi delivered a keynote address at the 8th Contact Group on the Sulu and Celebes Seas Regional Plenary hosted by UNODC

On 15 November, the 8th Contact Group on the Sulu and Celebes Seas Regional Plenary hosted by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) was held in Kuala Lumpur. Ambassador Takahashi delivered a keynote address at the meeting.
 
In his keynote address, Ambassador Takahashi highlighted Japan’s continuous support to coast guard agencies in Southeast Asia and stated that Japan was willing to cooperate with UNODC to counter maritime crimes in the region. Ambassador Takahashi also stressed that Japan would continue cooperation towards the realization of both “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)” and “ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP)” with ASEAN and other countries such as Australia, India and the US, which together with Japan are also known as the QUAD, to protect the rules-based international order.
 
The Sulu and Celebes Seas connect the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia with various cross-border maritime crimes occurring in the area. The situation on maritime crimes in the Sulu and Celebes Seas was discussed during the meeting and it was confirmed that the cooperation among the three coastal countries of the Sulu and Celebes Seas would be further strengthened through various activities to deal with international maritime crimes.
