Award of the ‘Minister's Awards for Overseas Promotion of Japanese Food’ to Mr. Miyagawa Atsushi and appointment of Mr. SAITO Sam Makoto as ‘Japanese Cuisine Goodwill Ambassador’
2024/12/23
On 20 December 2024, Mr. MIYAGAWA Atsushi received the ‘Minister's Awards for Overseas Promotion of Japanese Food’ at the General Assembly of Japan’s National Council for Export Promotion of Agricultural, Forestry and Fishery Products and Processed Foods. On the same day, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries appointed Mr. SAITO Sam Makoto as the ‘Japanese Cuisine Goodwill Ambassador’ in Malaysia.
The ‘Minister's Awards for Overseas Promotion of Japanese Food’ is awarded by the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Japan to those who have made significant contributions to the introduction and promotion of Japanese food and food culture overseas, with a view to further expand exports of Japanese agricultural, forestry and fisheries products and foods.
Japanese Cuisine Goodwill Ambassadors are expected to promote Japanese food and dietary culture both within and outside Japan such as by providing advice from a professional standpoint to professionals abroad specializing in Japanese cuisine.
Mr. MIYAGAWA founded JMG Trading Sdn Bhd, a trading company specializing in the import and sale of Japanese fresh, chilled and frozen food products in Malaysia. Based on his vast experience in the Japanese food business in Malaysia, he developed his own sales channels to local supermarkets that had not distributed Japanese fruit and vegetables previously. In addition, he served as the Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Food Coordinator of JETRO Kuala Lumpur for 10 years from 2013, contributing to the promotion of Japanese food and food culture in Malaysia by providing advice based on his own experiences to businesses considering Malaysia as an export market.
Mr. SAITO is the owner-chef of two Japanese restaurants in Malaysia, Sushi Hibiki and Sakana Japanese Dining. He has been working enthusiastically to promote Japanese food culture in Malaysia, including founding the Sushi Summit, a Japanese food promotion event, which conducts promotional activities in collaboration with fishery businesses in the Tohoku region, as well as develops Muslim-friendly Japanese food menus. He has now been appointed as a Japanese Cuisine Goodwill Ambassador, following a recommendation from within Japan.
In May this year, the Embassy of Japan in Malaysia and JETRO Kuala Lumpur established the Japan Food Export Platform in Malaysia to provide professional and continuous support to exporters and Japanese food businesses in Malaysia. The Embassy of Japan will continue to promote Japanese food in Malaysia through the activities of the platform.
