The Embassy of Japan in Malaysia, in cooperation with the University of Tsukuba Malaysia (UTMy), is holding a special lecture series by UTMy faculty members. As the second lecture in this series, on 26 June, the Embassy held a special lecture at the Japanese Chamber of Trade and Industry, Malaysia (JACTIM), by Professor Dr. TSUJIMURA Maki, Professor at the University of Tsukuba and Dean of the School of Transdisciplinary Science and Design, UTMy.
Professor TSUJIMURA specializes in hydrology, water resources, and groundwater science. For many years, he has conducted research on the circulation processes of water and materials in terrestrial environments, including groundwater, spring water, and river water, with a focus on clarifying where water is recharged, what routes it follows, and how long it takes to move through the environment. In this lecture, Professor TSUJIMURA spoke on the theme of “Where Does Water Come From? — Tracing the Journeys of Groundwater and Surface Water —”. He explained, with examples from Japan and other regions, the importance of understanding the “history of water”: where water comes from, what pathways it follows, and how long it takes to move through the environment. He also offered insightful observations on the importance of understanding the water cycle across time and space in order to identify the background of water-related issues and gain clues for sustainable water-resource management. During the Q&A session, participants raised questions on topics such as sudden urban floods, hard and soft water and water-quality standards, the effects of agriculture and wastewater treatment on water quality, and the use of isotope analysis to understand the water cycle, leading to a lively exchange of views.
The lecture provided a valuable opportunity to introduce the diverse expertise of researchers at UTMy, while further deepening exchanges between Japan and Malaysia in science and technology, the application of research to social challenges, and higher education.
