Tanabata Bon Odori Matsuri 2026

On 26 July, Tanabata Bon Odori Matsuri 2026 was held at AEON Mall Bandar Dato’ Onn in Johor Bahru, with Counsellor of Embassy Mr. KITAOKA Tatsuya attending on behalf of the Embassy of Japan in Malaysia.
The event was organized to introduce Japanese summer traditions, including Tanabata and Bon Odori, and to create opportunities for interaction among members of the local community through these cultural experiences. A wide variety of programmes took place at the venue, including Tanabata wish decorations, mochi pounding, Bon Odori dancing, sales of Japanese food and products, and stage performances.
In his remarks at the opening ceremony, Counsellor KITAOKA stated that Tanabata symbolizes hope for the future, while Bon Odori represents the bonds between people and a sense of community. He expressed his hope that these cultural experiences would deepen interaction with the local community and contribute to greater mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and Malaysia.
The opening ceremony featured mochi pounding, remarks by the organizers and distinguished guests, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and the presentation of commemorative gifts.
