“Japanese Cuisine Goodwill Ambassador” Award Ceremony

“Japanese Cuisine Goodwill Ambassador Award Ceremony” was held on 10th November 2021 at Sushi Oribe, a Japanese Restaurant in Kuala Lumpur. Ambassador Oka awarded the Japanese Cuisine Goodwill Ambassador certificates to Mr. KAWASAKI Naoya, Master Chef of Sushi Oribe, and Mr. Thomas Ling Tech Chong, Principal Partner of Entwine Consultancy.
At the ceremony, Ambassador Oka appreciated Mr. KAWASAKI and Mr. Thomas Ling for promoting Japanese cuisine and dietary culture, which had been designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the sake, which is strongly associated with Japanese cuisine. Ambassador also mentioned that next year would be the 40th anniversary of the Look East Policy and it would be a great boost for Japanese cuisine. He expressed his expectation that both of Japanese Cuisine Goodwill Ambassadors would play crucial roles in promotion of Japanese cuisine towards next year.
Mr. KAWASAKI mentioned that it would have been difficult to work as a Japanese cuisine chef in Malaysia without kind support from Malaysians, hence he would like to repay Malaysian’s kindness by providing authentic Japanese cuisine which represents the cultural heritage of Japan.
Meanwhile, Thomas Ling touched on the shared commonalities in culture and food heritage between Japan, Malaysia and South East Asia. Since next year marks the 40th anniversary of the Look East Policy, he wished that more experience of Japan could be widely shared, including cuisine and dietary culture, and to see friendship fostered through working together.
The Embassy of Japan in Malaysia would like to congratulate the appointment of Mr. Thomas Ling and Mr. KAWASAKI as Japanese Cuisine Goodwill Ambassadors and we look forward to their further contributions on promoting Japanese cuisine and dietary culture.
