Foreign Minister’s Commendations for FY 2023

The Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation is initiated with the aim to recognise and honour individuals and organisations that have made tremendous contribution to promote amity between Japan and other countries.
This year, the Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation will be conferred to 1 Japanese individual and 1 Malaysian individual under the Embassy’s jurisdiction. Those representing a wide range of backgrounds were selected on the basis of their outstanding contribution to promotion of exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and Malaysia.
The recipients are as follows:
(1) Ms. KONDO Yoko, Former Principal of Pusat Bahasa Teikyo
Former Principal Ms. Kondo has long been involved in people-to-people exchanges between Japan and Malaysia through the Look East Policy, which was implemented by the Government of Malaysia. For over 20 years, she taught Japanese to students who wish to study in Japan at the Pusat Bahasa Teikyo in Malaysia, a preparatory education institute for the LEP students, and served as the Principal of PBT from 2010 to 2017. As a staff of the institute since its early days, Ms Kondo not only laid the foundation of Japanese language education at PBT and established teaching methods to train younger teachers, but also developed the institute as its Principal and contributed to the promotion of Japanese language education and study in Japan under the LEP in Malaysia.

(2) Dr. Jamila Binti Mohd, Head of Malaysia-Japan Research Centre (MJRC), Universiti Malaya
Dr. Jamila has been involved in educational exchanges between Japan and Malaysia for many years. She studied in Japan under the Look East Policy, which was implemented by the Government of Malaysia, and later obtained her Master's and Doctoral degrees in Japan as a Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship student. After returning to Malaysia, for 25 long years, Dr. Jamila made great efforts to promote study in Japan by utilizing her experience in Japan as a Japanese language lecturer at AAJ (Ambang Asuhan Jepun), Universiti Malaya, which provides special preparatory programme to Malaysian youths aiming to enter Japanese universities. In 2022, Dr Jamila transferred to the Japanese Programme, Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, Universiti Malaya, which offers the only bachelor’s degree programme in Malaysia in Japanese Language and Linguistics. In addition, in 2021, Dr. Jamila was appointed as the Director of Malaysia-Japan Research Centre at Universiti Malaya, and has been contributing to the promotion of Japanese language education and Japanese studies in Malaysia through the Grant Assistance for Cultural Grassroots Project of Japan and Japan-related various events.
